Transportation analytics specialist StreetLight Data has released new data that reveals a decrease in active travel in the USA since 2019, despite brief increases during the pandemic. The data provides insights into walking and active mode share across the Top 100 largest US metros and will be of great interest to transportation planners nationwide. Nationally, active transportation accounted for 10% of trips in 2022, down from 14% in 2019, with a noticeable rise in biking trips and a decline in pedestrian activity. The decrease in walking trips is more significant in regions with harsh weather conditions and primarily affects utility trips rather than recreational walks. All major metros experienced a drop in walking activity, with some experiencing a slight increase in 2022. New York City led in walking activity per capita for 2022, followed by Orlando and Las Vegas. Transportation professionals can use this data to effectively allocate resources and invest in pedestrian infrastructure beyond traditional boundaries to increase walking.
