Rogue Worlds Throw Planetary Ideas Out of Orbit

In a surprising discovery, astronomers have found pairs of Jupiter-mass objects in the Orion nebula, a phenomenon that had not been predicted by existing theories of star and planet formation. The objects, dubbed Jupiter Mass Binary Objects, or JUMBOs for short, challenge conventional wisdom about how planets and stars form. While some of the JUMBOs may turn out to be mirages, further observations will help confirm their existence. Theorists are already working to explain these perplexing worlds, with simulations showing that the ejection of pairs of Jupiters is possible if the planets are close together. The discovery was made using images from the James Webb Space Telescope.
