In this article, the author explores the challenges and difficulties that autonomous trucking faces compared to autonomous rideshare services. Despite the initial belief that autonomous trucks would be easier to develop due to their predictable and structured driving scenarios on freeways, the author argues that the complexities of high speeds, large size, and freeway-specific challenges pose significant obstacles. The article discusses the limitations of current sensing solutions and the need for precise control systems. However, the author remains hopeful that advancements in technology and hard work from AV developers will eventually overcome these challenges.
