Ubisoft Says Out Loud: We Want People to Get Used to Not Owning What They Bought

In a surprising move, Ubisoft’s director of subscriptions, Philippe Tremblay, admitted that the company wants players to get comfortable with the idea of not owning their games. With the rebranding of its Ubisoft+ subscription services, Ubisoft aims to shift consumer thinking away from game ownership and towards subscription-based access similar to Spotify and Netflix. While Tremblay claims the service has had millions of subscribers and half a billion hours played, it may be a tougher sell than Xbox’s Game Pass, since Ubisoft’s service is nearly double the price and only includes Ubisoft titles. It remains to be seen how the gaming public will respond to this shift in mindset.
