In March 2023, an increase in crashes of Windows Explorer was observed after the release of a specific Windows Insider build. Upon analysis, it was discovered that the crashes were caused by a corrupted instruction pointer or code. The instruction pointer was in the middle of an instruction, leading to misinterpretation of the instruction to be executed. Further investigation revealed that a third-party DLL, part of a “shell enhancement” program, was common to all crash dumps. This program patched Explorer using information obtained from the Microsoft symbol server. However, changes made to an internal function caused the patcher to malfunction. This issue is common whenever a new build is released, leading to crashes and decreased customer satisfaction.
