ArVid: Russians squeezed 4 hard drives into one VHS tape in the 90s

In post-Soviet Russia in 1995, cheap and efficient data storage was a challenge. One innovative solution was the ArVid card, a Russian-made product that allowed users to store 4 hard-drives’ worth of data on a single VHS tape using their home VCR. This affordable option provided an impressive amount of storage, with one tape capable of storing more data than an entire hard drive. The ArVid system was reliable, with error correction and verification processes in place. While primarily used for data backup, there were interesting alternative uses such as copying computer games and even makeshift surveillance systems.
