Khronos Releases AV1 Decode in Vulkan Video with SDK Support for H.264/H.265

The Vulkan Working Group at Khronos has introduced a new extension called “Vulkan Video,” which includes video format decode and encode extensions. The latest release of Vulkan 1.3.277 features the new Decode AV1 video extension, which is a royalty-free open standard for video compression developed by the Alliance for Open Media. The Decode AV1 extension enables cross-platform, portable, and performant AV1 video decoding. Vulkan drivers that support both Decode AV1 and Encode H.264/H.265 extensions are already available from NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel. The open-source community, including GStreamer and FFmpeg, has also adopted Vulkan Video. Feedback and support from developers are welcomed by the Vulkan Video subgroup.
