A Man Who Invented VR Goggles 50 Years Too Soon

Science fiction owes a great debt to Hugo Gernsback, the man who brought us Amazing Stories, the first magazine in the genre. Gernsback, an inventor in his own right, came up with some intriguing creations, including television eyeglasses. These glasses, which Gernsback believed millions would yearn for, were a pocket-sized portable TV set, complete with separate screens for each eye and the ability to display stereoscopic images. Although they were deemed impractical at the time, Gernsback’s ideas often proved ahead of their time, with many of his concepts, such as microfilm, tape recorders, and electronic newspapers, becoming a reality. And while some of his notions, like lunar mining and teleportation, remain unrealized, it’s clear that Gernsback was a visionary ahead of his time.
