Apple’s autonomous vehicle project has been shrouded in secrecy, but records submitted to a California agency reveal that the company significantly ramped up its testing efforts in 2023. Apple tested nearly four times the number of miles on public roads compared to the previous year and more than 30 times the number of miles tested in 2021. Most of the testing took place in the second half of the year, with a peak in August at 83,900 miles. Apple has a permit to test autonomous vehicles in California, but only with a safety driver present. The testing totals, while lower than some competitors, should be considered within the context of the state’s reporting guidelines.
