Scientists are suggesting the addition of a sixth category to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale to account for the increasing intensity of tropical cyclones caused by climate change. The current scale underestimates the actual risk and fails to capture the potential destruction of the most intense storms with wind speeds greater than 157 miles per hour. The authors of the study propose a sixth category for hurricanes with winds exceeding 192 miles per hour. The need for a category 6 hurricane indicates the worsening risks of climate change and the necessity to improve communication about all hurricane-related risks.
