VirtualBox KVM Public Release

We have been working tirelessly to develop a fast, reliable, and secure KVM backend for VirtualBox. VirtualBox is a versatile Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) that supports various guest operating systems and offers a consistent user interface across different host operating systems. Our KVM backend allows VirtualBox to run virtual machines using the Linux KVM hypervisor instead of the standard VirtualBox kernel module. This switch offers numerous benefits, especially for customers who rely on virtualization to separate security domains and require additional host system hardening for certification purposes. KVM also enhances Windows’ security features when running in a virtualized environment. The open-source KVM module, included in the Linux kernel, supports use cases that are challenging with the stock VirtualBox module. Additionally, by combining VirtualBox, QEMU, and Cloud Hypervisor, we can explore unique use cases with different priorities, benefits, and drawbacks. We are committed to open-source and have released our changes on GitHub. You can build VirtualBox with our KVM backend and experience the improvements for yourself. We have exciting plans for 2024 and will share more technical details and updates on our progress throughout the year.
