Fedora Atomic Desktops

We’re thrilled to introduce Fedora Atomic Desktops, a new family of Fedora Linux spins that simplify the discussion and naming of rpm-ostree and future atomic spins. This is actually a reintroduction of Project Atomic, which started 10 years ago with the development of Atomic Host. Over time, we’ve seen the introduction of Fedora Atomic Workstation (now Silverblue), Kinoite, Sericea, and Onyx. To better organize these spins and make them easier to talk about, we decided to create a new brand. This rebranding also aligns with the preference of many contributors who prefer to use the term “atomic” rather than “immutable.” The four atomic spins in Fedora Atomic Desktops are Silverblue, Kinoite, Sway Atomic (formerly Sericea), and Budgie Atomic (formerly Onyx). Going forward, new atomic spins will follow the format “Fedora (DE name) Atomic.” This change will bring more clarity and simplicity to the naming convention. Fedora Atomic Desktops now joins Fedora CoreOS and Fedora IoT as part of the rpm-ostree family. We’re excited about this change and hope it will make it easier to understand and discuss this type of operating system.
