Antarctic English

Antarctic English is a unique variety of the English language spoken in Antarctica and the subantarctic islands by scientists and workers in the tourism industry. The dialect features unique words and accents, influenced by Spanish-speaking South Americans and Northern European explorers. Australian writer Bernadette Hince documented Antarctic vocabulary in her Antarctic Dictionary, highlighting words not used elsewhere. The dialect has over 200 words for different types of ice and unique terms for tourist encounters, such as “Kodak poisoning.” Antarctic English has also influenced other English varieties, with Arctic English terms being first adopted in Antarctica.
