Old vs. new growth trees and the wood products they make

Old growth wood from trees 100 years ago is far superior to new growth wood in terms of stability and longevity, similar to the difference between granite and paper. Old growth wood has tight growth rings, more heartwood, and is free of knots, making it structurally superior. New growth wood, on the other hand, begins to warp and rot after only twenty years. The practice of using finger-jointed wood in new growth products started in the 1970s to compensate for poor wood quality. Instead of throwing out old windows made of old growth wood, they should be restored as they can last another 100 years.
