Dallol, located in Ethiopia, is a unique terrestrial hydrothermal system known for its vibrant colors and mineral patterns, with very acidic fluids flowing from its hydrothermal springs. The area resembles Yellowstone National Park’s hot springs, but the colors here are created by the oxidation of iron, rather than biological activity. The site features a wide variety of unusual mineral formations, such as salt pillars and egg-shaped crusts. Despite extreme conditions, ultra-small archaea thrive in Dallol, attracting attention for astrobiological studies. Recent research has shown contrasting findings on the presence of life in Dallol’s hyper-acidic and hypersaline ponds.
