Scenes from the last operational Morse-code radio station in North America

Maritime Morse code was officially discontinued in 1999, but in California, a group of enthusiasts known as the “radio squirrels” continue the tradition at KPH Maritime Radio. The station, the last Morse-code radio station in North America, beeps out maritime news and weather reports every Saturday, communicating with the SS Jeremiah O’Brien and using vintage equipment to tap out messages. While Morse code is no longer widely used, the “radio squirrels” work to keep the language alive, honoring the past and welcoming new members, like a 17-year-old eager to join in the rhythmic communication.
