MethaneSAT, a new satellite launched into orbit, is one of many instruments monitoring methane emissions. Despite the existing probes and technology, pinpointing methane leaks remains a challenge due to the numerous sources worldwide. MethaneSAT aims to provide more accurate basin-level emissions estimates, track progress in reducing emissions, and assist in developing new methane regulations and standards. The satellite’s data will be freely available to the public, offering a revolutionary step towards understanding and controlling methane emissions. However, there are still limitations in monitoring natural sources of methane, indicating the need for further advancements in satellite technology.
