The Oregon Outback International Dark Sky Sanctuary

A 2.5 million-acre region in southern Oregon has been designated the largest Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world, now known as the Oregon Outback International Dark Sky Sanctuary. Plans are in place to expand the sanctuary to 11.4 million acres across Harney and Malheur counties. This designation was given by DarkSky International, with the goal of preserving dark skies and the nighttime environment through responsible lighting. Stargazers flock to southern Oregon for excellent views of meteor showers and other astronomical events due to the dark, clear skies. The project highlights the power of collective action in protecting the night sky for future generations.
