A Seemingly Fake Person Was Running OpenAI’s $175M Startup Fund

The Orchard in Santa Ana, CA, is an affordable housing complex for chronically homeless residents, with a community garden and commercial kitchen. Surprisingly, in 2023 it briefly served as the headquarters for OpenAI’s $175 million venture capital fund, until it was revealed that the documents filed with the California Secretary of State listing Jacob Vespers were fake. OpenAI spokesperson, Madhav Dutt, denied Vespers’ existence and stated that the documents were completely fabricated. The situation raised questions about the legitimacy of the filing, but OpenAI later filed a new document with the state, disavowing any connection to Vespers. Remarkably, unit 234 at The Orchard was listed as the headquarters for multiple businesses associated with Vespers, despite Integrity Housing’s COO claiming no knowledge of it.
