Untergunther – Restoration of the Pantheon Clock

The Untergunther, a secretive French team, undertook a daring mission in 2005 to clandestinely restore the neglected 1850 Wagner clock in the Pantheon of Paris. Despite initial enthusiasm from the Pantheon administrator, Bernard Jeannot, he later decided to suppress news of the restoration. The Untergunther, undeterred, returned on Christmas Eve to connect the bells to the clock, causing a rift with the authorities. In 2007, four members faced court charges for destroying a lock on the Pantheon’s grid. The incident highlighted the clash between the unconventional heritage preservation methods of the Untergunther and the bureaucratic National Heritage administration’s inefficiency.
