West Virginia’s Greenbrier resort, known for its opulence and history, surprised many when it was revealed that the new West Virginia Wing, built in the late 1950s, actually housed a nuclear bunker intended to shelter all members of the United States Congress. The bunker, codenamed Project Greek Island, was a well-kept secret for nearly 35 years due to the loyalty and discretion of the locals who worked at the resort. The bunker was eventually declassified in 1992 and opened for public tours in 1995, causing controversy over the use of taxpayer dollars and the prioritization of politicians’ safety over that of ordinary citizens.
