Kapaia solar-plus-storage facility on Kauai Island uses Tesla batteries to store energy. On 2 April 2023, an oil-fired turbine failure led to a potential blackout. However, grid-forming inverters connected to battery systems ensured stability. This event showcases a future reliant on solar and wind power, requiring rapid grid technology advancements. Grid-forming inverters are crucial for integrating renewable energy sources into grids, providing stability and support during disturbances. Such innovative technology is key to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The potential of grid-forming inverters is being explored globally, with ongoing projects and standardization efforts underway. Controversially, the current grid system’s inadequacy for a renewable future is highlighted.
