The Cosmic Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) project, launched by the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow in 2016, has discovered a connection between cosmic radiation fluctuations and earthquakes – with the potential to help predict them. The correlation between global seismic activity and changes in the intensity of cosmic radiation measured on Earth’s surface was unexpected. An analysis of cosmic ray intensity data from the Neutron Monitor Database project and the Pierre Auger Observatory revealed a distinct correlation between alterations in the intensity of secondary cosmic radiation and magnitudes of 4 or more on the Richter scale, but predicting the specific locations of seismic events remains elusive.
