The United States Air Force is making significant progress in developing AI-controlled aircraft that could rival human pilots. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall recently flew in an autonomously-controlled F-16 Fighting Falcon as part of the Next Generation Air Dominance program. The AI was able to maneuver the fighter in simulated dogfights against manned aircraft, leading Kendall to suggest that AI could potentially outperform less experienced pilots. However, concerns about autonomous combat systems, or “killer robots,” have been raised. Despite these concerns, the U.S. military is continuing to develop this technology to stay ahead of near-peer adversaries like China and Russia.
