Mathematicians and the Selection Task

Mathematicians and the Selection Task study compared the performance of mathematics undergraduates, mathematics staff, and history undergraduates on a logical problem. Surprisingly, less than a third of students and less than half of staff answered correctly. The results revealed that mathematicians made different mistakes than expected. The study challenges the assumption that logic plays a major role in mathematics and raises questions about the role of error checking in mathematical thought. The findings provide insight into the mindset of mathematicians and suggest a need for further research in this area.
