FDA denies petition against use of phthalates in food packaging

The FDA has denied a petition to reconsider the ban on ortho-phthalates in food due to safety concerns. Ortho-phthalates are chemicals used in plastic products to make them soft. The FDA determined that the reconsideration petition does not provide a basis for changing their response to the original petition. The decision to deny the original petition remains unchanged. The FDA will continue to provide updates on phthalates in food packaging and contact applications. For more information, visit the FDA’s phthalates website.
