Edward C. Stone, 1936-2024

Caltech’s Edward C. Stone, a giant in space physics and planetary astronomy, passed away at 88 after six decades at Caltech. Best known for leading NASA’s Voyager project for 50 years, Stone led the twin spacecraft to explore the outer planets and interstellar space. His legacy includes overseeing 21 JPL missions, the Mars Pathfinder, and Spitzer Space Telescope restructure. Stone’s work spanned cosmic ray physics, LIGO, and the Thirty Meter Telescope. Named JPL director in 1991, he is remembered for expanding our knowledge of the universe and inspiring future scientists. Stone’s influence will be profoundly missed in the astronomy community.
