Benjamin Thorpe (1782-1870) was a pioneering scholar in Old English texts, publishing vast editions and translations. Despite obscurity regarding his background, he studied antiquities in Copenhagen, married Mary Anne Otté, and adopted her daughter Elise, though their relationship was strained. Thorpe, humble but prolific, produced numerous translations and editions of Old English works. Though overshadowed by John Mitchell Kemble, Thorpe made significant contributions to Anglo-Saxon studies and was a respected member of various organizations. However, his reputation was briefly tarnished due to errors in reprints of his Beowulf edition, highlighted in a scathing letter from a Dutch student.
