The Gulkana Site, home to significant Alaskan Native copper artifacts, has been a neglected treasure for decades due to a data management backlog in archaeology. Despite being excavated 50 years ago, much of the valuable information has remained unanalyzed. The author, a Ph.D. student at Purdue University, is utilizing digital public archaeology to breathe new life into the site’s data. By converting old handwritten notes into digital maps, using AI, and involving the local Ahtna community in the research, the author aims to not only uncover more about the Gulkana Site but also connect the next generation with their heritage through technology.
