University of Glasgow astronomers have used gravitational wave analysis techniques to shed light on the function of the ancient Antikythera mechanism, believed to have been used to track the Greek lunar year. Contrary to its portrayal in the movie “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” the mechanism was not a time-travel device but a hand-operated mechanical computer dating back to the second century BCE. Through Bayesian and gravitational wave analysis methods, researchers determined that the mechanism’s calendar ring likely contained 354 or 355 holes, showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship and precision of ancient Greek technology.
