Marc Brooker is an engineer at Amazon Web Services who enjoys building things that work and also dabbles in skiing, cooking, machining, and welding. He recently encountered a retired Olympic ski tuner on a chairlift who claimed that ski tuning is a scam and that keeping skis dry is all that’s needed to maintain sharpness. Marc doubted this and used an inspection microscope to confirm, finding abrasion damage on his own skis. He shared his process of using a 3D printed jig with a diamond stone to tune the ski edges. Marc believes a sharp ski makes all the difference in performance on icy slopes.
