Peter Buxtun, whistleblower who exposed Tuskegee syphilis study, dies aged 86

Peter Buxtun, who exposed the unethical Tuskegee study where hundreds of Black men were purposely untreated for syphilis, passed away at 86 from Alzheimer’s. His actions led to an end of the study in 1972 after agency officials dismissed his concerns. Buxtun’s courage was recognized by President Bill Clinton and the families of the study participants. Born in Prague to a Jewish family who fled Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, Buxtun devoted his life to justice and advocacy. He was a combat medic, writer, and collector of artifacts, known for his wit, generosity, and staunch defense of personal freedoms. Despite his humility, Buxtun’s legacy remains significant.
