In the 1950s and ’60s, Tom Lehrer, a brilliant song satirist, recorded songs without radio play that sold by word of mouth. He taught math at UCSC and spent half his year in Santa Cruz. Lehrer’s disappearance after living there for 47 years puzzled many locals. Despite turning down interviews, Lehrer’s influence endures, with productions of his work worldwide. His UCSC classes were popular, blending math and musical theater. Lehrer believed Santa Cruz was a fun place to teach and live, buying a home near Pleasure Point. Now 96, Lehrer’s legacy lives on, as relevant today as ever.
