Dining Critic Tries Nutraloaf, the Prison Food for Misbehaving Inmates (2010]

Dining critic Jeff Ruby of Chicago magazine tried Nutraloaf, a disciplinary food served to misbehaving inmates at Cook County Jail. Sheriff Tom Dart defends the use of Nutraloaf, a tasteless, brick-like loaf containing a range of ingredients from vegetables to poultry. Despite its unappetizing appearance, Nutraloaf is surprisingly bland in taste, achieving its goal of neutrality. Inmates who cause problems are given Nutraloaf as a consequence, leading most to comply with jail rules. The controversial disciplinary food has sparked lawsuits in some states, but correctional departments continue to serve it as a punishment. Nutraloaf may not be cruel, but it is certainly unusual.
