Four billion years in four minutes – Simulating worlds on the GPU

This post explores the creation of a procedural earth simulation using GLSL fragment shaders, covering the planet’s history from its molten beginnings. The simulation updates at 60 frames per second and involves generating detailed terrain, craters, tectonic movement, river basins, climate patterns, and life distribution. The model accurately replicates natural phenomena such as wind circulation and animal population dynamics, creating realistic visualizations. A surprising turn in the narrative occurs when humanity colonizes the planet, leading to drastic climate change due to fossil fuel consumption. This controversial development results in extreme temperatures, rendering parts of the planet uninhabitable.
