A stunning floor mosaic from an ancient Roman villa near Naples, Italy has been unearthed underwater, dating back to the third century C.E. The villa was located in Baiae, known as the Las Vegas of ancient Rome, where indulgence and debauchery were rampant. The mosaic, made of colorful marble in the opus sectile style, shows complex geometric motifs and craftsmanship. Due to bradyseism, the villa ultimately sank into the sea, leading to its current fragile condition. Restoration efforts are underway, with researchers working to recreate the designs on land. Divers have also found fragments of the villa’s walls, showcasing the fascinating history of ancient Rome.
