CoRncrete: A corn starch based building material (2017)

Starch is a versatile natural polymer often used in cooking, but it also has industrial applications. CoRncrete, a novel construction material, is made by combining corn starch, sand, and water. The mixture is self-compacting when wet, then heated to create a hardened material with compressive strength up to 26 MPa. Factors like water content and heating procedure affect its strength. The material’s biodegradability and renewability make it a sustainable option, but its limitations need to be considered. The surprising use of corn starch in construction and the potential benefits of CoRncrete make it an intriguing development in the field.
