National Archives Pushes Google Gemini AI on Employees

In June, the U.S. National Archives presented Google’s Gemini AI as a productivity tool for its employees, with plans to launch a public-facing chatbot named “Archie AI” in December. Employee concerns about AI in archiving, the potential for inaccuracies, and privacy were raised during the presentation. Despite redacted details, the AI was demonstrated to mimic an “expert archivist,” raising skepticism among employees. The National Archives aims to leverage AI to improve access to historical records, with Archie AI generating AI summaries linked to digitized documents. Concerns about reliability, accuracy, and environmental impact of AI were highlighted by employees.
