Kurt Vonnegut, known for his novel Slaughterhouse-Five, was also a game designer who created GHQ in 1956. Recently unearthed, GHQ is a board game that showcases Vonnegut’s grasp of modern warfare, in contrast to his later cynical view of war in The Sirens of Titan. Intriguingly, Vonnegut believed GHQ could serve as a training tool for future military leaders. Geoff Engelstein, who revamped the game for release, ponders what might have happened if GHQ had been published alongside other influential war games of the era. The game is now available for purchase, much to the delight of Vonnegut’s son, who believes his father would be proud of its success.
