Necromanteion of Acheron

The Nekromanteion, or “Oracle of the Dead,” was an influential ancient Greek necromancy temple linked to Hades and Persephone. Positioned along the Acheron river in Epirus, it was deemed the entrance to Hades. The temple involved elaborate rituals where worshipers sacrificed animals, ate a meal of beans, pork, and bread, and consumed a narcotic compound before praying to the deceased. Controversially, the identification of the Necromanteion site in Mesopotamos is disputed, with newer evidence confirming it as a fortified farmhouse. Surprisingly, the excavations uncovered Roman military weaponry like pila and catapult components, mystifyingly mistaken as crane parts by Dakaris.
