Physicist Erdong Wang and his team at Brookhaven National Laboratory have designed and tested the world’s highest-voltage polarized electron gun for the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC, a cutting-edge nuclear physics facility, will accelerate and collide polarized electrons with protons and ions to delve into the fundamental building blocks of matter. The project, a collaboration between Brookhaven Lab and Stony Brook University, involved innovative research and engineering efforts. The unique laser-driven electron gun will be a critical component of the EIC, putting the “e” in the collider. The project showcases a strong partnership between scientific institutions aiming to advance nuclear physics research.
