A bad day at the office

A remarkable photo from the Imperial War Museum collection shows a seaplane stuck 300 feet up a 350-foot tall radio mast, with the pilot unconscious. Three brave men climbed up to rescue him, securing a rope and lowering him to safety despite the imminent danger of collapse. The crash occurred in 1917 at Horsea Island in Portsmouth Island, with Acting Flight Commander E.A. de Ville piloting the Sopwith Baby aircraft. The rescue team, including Rath who was awarded the Albert Medal in Gold, displayed incredible courage. This daring rescue story highlights the risks faced by these heroes in saving a life in a perilous situation.
