A filmmaker and a crooked lawyer shattered Denmark’s self-image

In downtown Copenhagen, Amira Smajic set up a hidden camera trap in an office, where she encouraged a parade of people, including motorcycle gang members and lawyers, to brag about their financial crimes. The resulting documentary, “The Black Swan,” directed by Mads Brügger, exposed the underbelly of Danish society and led to arrests and investigations. The revelations shook Denmark’s belief in its own virtue and sparked discussions on trust, corruption, and crime. Smajic, a former criminal herself, was revealed to be involved in ongoing criminal activities, showing the blurred lines between the underworld and the everyday citizens.
