A peek inside Japan’s largest “Dagashi” store

Nihon-ichi no Dagashi Uriba is Japan’s largest dagashi store, located in Okayama. Dagashi are cheap, small Japanese confectionery and snacks you would find in corner stores. Despite connotations of cheapness, dagashi are a core part of Japanese culture and have a wide array of both sweet and savory items. However, these sweets face a difficult future as Japan shifts towards convenience stores and supermarkets. Founder Hideyuki Akiyama started the store to keep dagashi tradition alive. Nihon-ichi no Dagashi Uriba is unique in that it stocks odd and quirky products that others will not, and aims to provide simple joys for all ages and serve society, rather than focusing on profits.
