A Record Number of Billion-Dollar Weather Disasters Hit the U.S. in 2023

In 2023, the U.S. experienced a record-breaking 25 billion-dollar weather and climate disasters, surpassing the previous record set in 2020. The increase in these extreme events such as hurricanes, storms, heavy rainfall, and wildfires can be attributed to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Between 1980 and 2022, the U.S. averaged eight billion-dollar disasters per year, but between 2018 and 2022, the average rose to 18. This year, the average time between these disasters dramatically reduced, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Climate Central emphasizes that the impacts of climate change worsen with each degree of global warming, but by taking immediate action to reduce carbon pollution, we can create a safer future with fewer extreme events.
