A solar gravitational lens will be humanity’s most powerful telescope (2022)

Credit: Toth V. T. & Turyshev, S.G. predict that a solar gravitational lens can be used to observe distant galaxies and even nearby exoplanets. The proposed telescope would be the size of the sun, providing a resolution of 10 square kilometers for objects 100 light-years away. Despite diffraction limitations, the telescope could detect a 1 Watt laser from Proxima Centauri b, 4 light-years away. Objects like exoplanets and neutron stars would be prime targets for this revolutionary telescope. The study suggests that a solar gravitational lens could be humanity’s most powerful telescope in the future.
