A vision for the alleviation of water scarcity in the US Southwest

In a desert region east of Los Angeles lies the Imperial Valley, an area heavily reliant on water from the Colorado River. However, the river’s flow has been decreasing due to climate change. California has been using its senior water rights to maintain its water supply but has also been struggling with the declining levels of the Salton Sea. To combat these issues, the author proposes building a solar-powered reverse osmosis desalination plant that can regulate the Salton Sea’s level and provide abundant water for irrigation. This project would also generate revenue through water sales, brine products, and increased land value. With the advancements in solar technology, this ambitious plan is now feasible.
