Scientists have been searching for the elusive Cross Seamount beaked whale for 18 years. They’ve heard its distinctive call but have never seen the animal. Some believe it may be a new species, while others think it could be a poorly understood known species. Jennifer McCullough, a biologist with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and her colleagues have analyzed nearly 20 years of recordings of the whale, concluding that it is a type of beaked whale but with unique behaviors. The whale’s nocturnal foraging habits make it even more difficult to study and identify. The search for the Cross Seamount beaked whale continues.
