‘Agua, Agua’

Bill Broyles recounts his near-death experience in the Sonoran Desert, mirroring the harrowing journey of Mexican prospector Pablo Valencia in 1905. Broyles, on the hunt for adventure and introspection, navigates the scorching landscape with water caches and determination, facing dehydration and hallucinations along the way. Valencia, after days without water, hallucinates and pushes through extreme thirst, crawling for miles towards salvation. Both men are eventually rescued, but Valencia’s story raises questions about immigration in the face of lethal desert crossings. Broyles’s experience highlights the danger and despair faced by many attempting to cross the border today.
