Am I the Unethical One?

Garret Merriam, an associate professor of philosophy at Sacramento State University, caught 40 out of 96 students cheating on an exam. After finding a previous exam uploaded to websites such as Quizlet, he uploaded a poisoned exam online and waited. When the students turned in their finals, Merriam compared them to the poisoned exam and found the students using the same wrong answers. His decision to count these answers as cheating was based on a standard that if there was no more than a 1 in 100 chance that the number of matching wrong answers was a coincidence, he counted them as having cheated. Merriam chose to share his story to Daily Nous to gauge the philosophy community’s view on the situation and ethical considerations for professors in similar situations.
